Japanese Schoolgirl Watch: Cue Up the Acne-Fighting, 128-Meg MP3 ...

In Tokyo, acne control rocks. The 1.2-ounce mpion MP3 player promises to improve a gal's complexion while pumping out J-pop. At around 21,000 yen ($184), it's a bit pricey for a player that packs only 128 megs of music, but the flash memory isn't the main draw. The mpion releases positively and negatively charged ions, which supposedly neutralize breakouts. Here are the instructions: Touch the device to the offending area as you listen to tunes, flip the switch to Minus, and hold for five to 10 minutes. Allegedly, the negative ions open pores and replenish moisture. Then, flip it to Positive and hold to reduce oil and close your pores back up. It just might zap all your zits faster than you can say "placebo effect!"

Scientists aglow over drug for radiation poisoning

With the Starship Enterprise seemingly doomed after losing warp power, Mr. Spock exposes himself to lethal radiation in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. After repairing the engines and saving the day, Spock dies.

Evidently, the movie's writers didn't think scientists would find a drug to cure radiation poisoning by the late 23rd century.

Yet local scientists may be on the verge of doing just that more than two centuries before the setting of the Star Trek film.

Rice University's Jim Tour and his colleagues at two Houston health institutions have found a drug that, when given to mice before radiation exposure, is 5,000 times more effective than the best-available therapy for radiation injuries.

Officials at the Department of Defense, seeking remedies for the radiation sickness that would follow a nuclear strike, were so taken by the research that they recently gave Tour a $540,000 grant and asked him to compress the next phase of testing into an almost unheard-of nine months.

The Vicky Files: Is Emery in the doghouse?

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us, and in my opinion, the biggest story isn't the perfection of the New England Patriots. It isn't whether another Manning can win a Super Bowl. Or even if "Spygate" will hang over the whole thing. It's halftime. Ever since the "wardrobe malfunction", the NFL has chosen "safe" acts for its biggest stage. This year, it turned to "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul, who -- many, many years ago -- had a music career. Now, she wasn't the most gifted singer or dancer, nor was she the most attractive musician, but somehow, she maintained a career long enough that she got the producers of one of America's top shows to buy into her. Her behavior on that show often is cringe-worthy, but it's nothing compared to what she is up to now. You see, Ms. Abdul wants to pre-tape her routine, because, ummm, she is too nervous to perform live.

Study Finds Smoking Causes Acne

Before you light up your next cigarette, a new study shows nicotine may have yet another hidden danger, especially for women. Local 12 Medical Reporter Liz Bonis explains in today's Health Alert. Not that you need another reason to quit, but this study found that smoking has been linked to serious problems with your skin. We stopped out in Western Hills today at Queen City Physicians to tell you more about this research. It is published in the British Journal of Dermatology. Scientists found women who smoke are four times more likely to develop non-inflammatory acne as non-smokers. This can cause blocked pores, large whiteheads and even small cysts. Women may be more at risk for this than guys who smoke, researchers say, because of fluctuating hormones. The nicotine makes this worse because it constricts blood vessels, and reduces the supply of oxygen to the skin which is needed for new cells. If you are having skin problems, make sure you see your own dermatologist.
